Autograph Authenticity

If you are thinking about purchasing an autograph please consider the following:

Autographs are great fun to collect and good quality autographed pictures really can be an investment. Enjoy your collection. It will give you a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction.

Autographs are very collectable and unfortunately there are always people out there who will take advantage of that by selling items that are not authentic. Establishing the authenticity of autographs can be difficult so here are some guidelines...

Internet Auction Sites

The majority of autographs that appear on internet auction sites are fake. This is why their prices are so cheap. The sad fact is that people are paying money for pictures that are completely worthless. Like all things in life you get what you pay for!

Know your stuff

When buying an autograph, make sure that you are aware of what the celebrity's signature looks like. We have seen people offering autographs with spelling mistakes in the name!
Find out how often a celebrity signs. One of the founder members of the UACC told us that Marlon Brando had signed about six items in his whole life! Check on an internet auction site to see how many you can find today!

Know your source

Always check the credentials of the person you are buying from. Do not accept a high feedback rating on an internet auction site as meaning that items are authentic. This usually means that the seller has delivered quickly, probably because they are signing to order. Most reputable autograph dealers will be able to provide details of when and where the item was signed.

Copies, autopens and secreterials

Its easy to scan and print copies of autogaphed pictures that look as good as the original. Check with a magnifying glass to see the tiny dots of the copied signature.

The autopen is often used by very busy celebrities to sign fan mail and pictures for postal requests! These signatures are very difficult to detect, as they look real. However, people who know the celebrity's autograph well will be able see that autopens always look exactly the same every time.

Busy celebrities will also use a secretary to sign their postal fan mail and pictures, these can often look similar to the real thing, but sadly secretarials are worthless to a collector.

Remember, only a picture that has been hand signed by the celebrity is classed as authentic. Always be wary when buying an autograph that has been recieved from a celebrity through the post. Most of the time they are not real.

ALWAYS BUY IN PERSON AUTOGRAPHS

In person autographs are pictures or documents that have been given to the celebrity and signed there and then. This is the only way to absolutely guarantee authenticity!
